The Northwood Women's Literary Club was
organized in 1905 and joined the General Federation of Women's Clubs in 1907.
The Northwood Club celebrated it's 100th anniversary in 2007. The General
Federation of Women's Clubs is one of the world's oldest and largest women's
volunteer service organizations. GFWC is a vibrant and connected sisterhood
of women who are creating better communities, expanding their own
possibilities, and extending friendship and support to women near and far.
The Northwood Literary Club meets at 7:30
on the 4th Tuesday of every month from March through November. Members take
turns hosting the meetings or preparing programs or events.
The purpose of the Literary Club is to
broaden and extend the education of our members through GFWC's six departments
of emphasis: The Arts, Conservation, Education, Home Life, Public Affairs,
International Affairs and other special projects. In addition, we support our
community through volunteerism, programs and other events. Our motto is:
"UNITY IN DIVERSITY".
The Literary Club has won numerous awards
from the State GFWC for our many Community Improvement
Projects, such as organizing community blood drives for 23 years, and for the
last 28 years we have sponsored a local sophomore to attend the ND Leadership
Seminar. We serve and prepare a program for the monthly birthday party at
NDHC each December, and compile and sell postal directories for our
community. We collect articles and supplies and old cell phones needed by the
CVIC for domestic violence victims and we collect beverage tabs for the Ronald
McDonald House. We raised funds to pay for the Centennial Park sign,
decorated a room at NDHC and established the temporary City Library with
donated books, after the tornado, and we will continue to support our city
library. Funds to support our projects are raised through our dues and our
annual used book sale.
Membership is open to all women in the
community. Annual dues are $20. More information on the club may be obtained
by calling 587-6179 or 587-5583.
